World War One was called the "Great
War" and the "War to end all wars" by many of its proponents and
supporters. May people believed that the Great War (at the time
there was no need to delineate between the first and second wars) was
going to be the once conflict that would end war for all time.
They believed that it would have such a widespread impact on
Europe that there would be no need for war ever again.
Many of these feelings were driven from a belief that this war would
have the power to settle all conflicts, and set things right for all
time to come so that conflict would no longer be needed. Many of these
sentiments were rooted in the new technologies developed and employed
before and during the war. There were many inventions developed during
the war, both as weapons of war, and as tools to help save lives.
